A new 60,000-SF athletic center for this college preparatory girls’ school contains a triple-court gymnasium and 3,300-SF jogging track in the gymnasium roof truss space.

The project is LEED Gold certified and received a USGBC Maryland design award. Special controls for the gymnasium HVAC system include CO₂ sensing and ventilation reset to provide maximum energy efficiency. In addition, economizer controls allow the gymnasium to be conditioned with 100% outdoor air when ambient conditions allow. Exhaust air from the locker rooms, bathrooms and storage spaces is routed through an enthalpy wheel and used to preheat/precool the ventilation air. Sustainable design elements incorporated into the plumbing systems include low-flow aerators on faucets, two-button toilets, and rainwater collection. Daylighting strategies were incorporated wherever possible, and lighting controls allow the use of natural light.
