Montgomery County Public Schools
Great Seneca Creek Elementary School
Germantown, MD

This was the County school system’s pilot LEED project and is the first LEED Certified school in Maryland, achieving Gold status.
The 82,500-SF school centers on the themes of “Earth, Water and Sun” as the organizing strategies to make sustainable design features visible and reconnect students with the natural environment. Features include a geothermal heat pump system, operable windows, solar shading, zoned HVAC with individual room thermostats, waterless urinals, dual flush toilets, low-flow faucet aerators and showerheads, and faucets with electronic sensors. Electricity is supplied by green power. Prior to design, JPA participated in a two-day Green Design Charette to help establish green building and high performance guidelines for all new school construction in the County.
